I actually much prefer to pay by credit card, as it affords some security if things go wrong. Had someone bought a Dell computer with my current account debit card, that would have been much worse! That's a shocker! I've already got my new egg card through, the account has been migrated to the new card number, and all the fraudulent transactions wiped from my account. No questions asked. Egg have always been excellent at spotting potential fraud on my account and dealing with it promptly. For example, it so happened that I used my card in Manchester, London and America all on the same day. They were on the phone within an hour of the 3rd transaction, just to check it was kosher. Credit card fraud happens, but it's not worth worrying about. This is I think the 3rd time in 15 years I've had to have a new card. Neither time cost me anything more than a little inconvenience. I have no idea where the breach was this time, but last time I was convinced it was an Indian restaurant in High Wycombe (cos it happened twice in 6 months, both times within 2 weeks of eating there). Yep I had already registered for Verified by Visa, that increases the confidence of the retailer as the liability for the debt is taken on by the card issuer (as opposed to the retailer as it is now) if the Verified by Visa check is passed. 3 months?!? It took 3 months for Cahoot/VISA to investigate the fraud and remove the disputed items from my account. I've always been very careful about giving my card details on-line but although each transaction is secure (made over an encrypted connection) you don't have control over what the owners of the site do with your details afterwards...
