How Not to Write an Email Newsletter

Posted in General, Home Business Opportunities, Search Engine Optimization at 7:31 pm by Colin McNulty

Last week, I offered to take a look at an email newsletter that a friend on mine sent out to his customer base, which got a terrible response, to see if I could spot anything that looked like it could be improved. I thought it worthy of posting up here as an example of what not to do, and compare it to a professionally produced email. Here’s the starting text of his email:

Here we are again..

Just like you, I am always looking for a super way to make money from Internet Marketing. Looking for an easy way in which I won’t have to work 14 hour days.

Well I bought “Get Google PPC Ads Free” a couple nights ago, and I read it all in one day. Lots of info, 124 pages of good explanations of a surprising system that promises to achieve my goal of making life easier.

From my first reading of this well written ebook, I understand the basic principles of the plan. I was surprised at the simplicity of the “Secret” and especially of the extra options provided.

All in all, I feel compelled to put you aware of this opportunity. You know I don’t bother you daily with every little product that comes out, like so many others do. I only offer what I consider to be the good stuff. So read this little note, take a look at the explanation, from the link below, and make your own decision…

And now my feedback:

> Here we are again..

My very first thought was: “Yes, here we go again, another spam email !” I would say this was a bad starting sentence. You need to say something here that grabs the readers attention. E.g. An email that was advertising a lottery syndicate scheme could start with: “I’ve won the lottery 3 times in the last 4 weeks, how have you done?”

> Just like you, I am always looking for a super way to make money from Internet Marketing. Looking for an easy way in which I won’t have to work 14 hour days.

I see what you are trying to do with “Just like you”, it’s important to appear on their side, however the theme of this paragraph is wrong. You should not be talking about “always looking”, you should be talking about “I finally found the easy step by step solution.”.

People are lazy, they want their problems solved and answers on a plate without having to do any work. This paragraph doesn’t instil the confidence that you are an authority that should be listened to, if you are “Just like you” and they are not making any money on the internet, why should your opinion be better than theirs? However, if you *used to be* like them, but have now finally cracked the secret… that’s a different matter.

> Well I bought “Get Google PPC Ads Free” a couple nights ago, and I read it all in one day. Lots of info, 124 pages of good explanations of a surprising system that promises to achieve my goal of making life easier.

Don’t say you bought it, you are immediately letting go the knowledge that they will have to spend money, but you’ve not sold the benefits yet. Big turn off. I understand why you quoted the number of pages, but that’s not selling the benefits, this will only put off people who don’t have the time to spend reading 124 pages of content. Also, there are a million e-books out there that “promise to achieve”, you need to sell this from the perspective of actually achieving based on following the books advice, which of course is hard if you haven’t!

> I understand the basic principles of the plan.

The implication here is that you didn’t understand the advanced bits! Oh dear, it must be too complicated or poorly explained…. See my point?

Now compare this to the opening paragraph of this email newsletter:

This may come as a SHOCK to you, but after all these years with Google selling pay-per-click advertising, a New York medical doctor comes forward and admits that he’s never paid for any of his now more than $87 million in otherwise paid-for advertising.

Let’s analyse the starting sentence:

“This may come as a SHOCK to you” - I’m about to learn something exciting (builds interest)
“after all these years” - this is a tried and tested system (builds credibility)
“a New York medical doctor ” - clearly an intelligent, educated and reputable man (builds authority).
“comes forward and admits ” - he’s reluctantly revealing a secret (builds interest)
“he’s never paid for any ” - he’s getting something for free. Hey, that’s what I want! (everyone likes free right?)
“more than $87 million ” - OMG, that’s huge, this must be an incredible system. He said I would be shocked, and he was right! (builds interest)

See how every single part of that opening sentence is designed to get you to want to read the rest?

Now compare that to the original starting sentence: “Here we are again..” It’s worlds apart.

Copyrighting is a tricky art and it can take all day to hand craft a single email. However this time and effort is definitely worth it when trying to get your message across.

Why Most Internet Marketers Fail

Posted in General, Home Business Opportunities at 7:08 am by Colin McNulty

A friend of mine approached me recently and pointed me at a “Stunning New PLR Package In Highly Lucrative Niche“. This scheme basically buys you a website template, pre-built with Google AdSense adverts, access to a load of articles, and a few bundled ad ons, and promises that if you buy it, you can fiddle with a bit of work, and then watch the cash roll in.

My friend asked me if that was the sort of thing I was interested in? Hmmmmm……

This “Niche” was basically student loan consolidation, so it’s a financial loan “niche”. It’s the Unsecured Loans market, which is clearly a huge, multi 10’s of Billions of dollars / pounds / bucks / yen etc market a year. I would stay away from this and all other mass markets: Real estate, Back pain, Hypnotherapy, Stop smoking, Weight loss, Exercise, Loans, Mortgages, Poker, Gambling, Credit Cards etc etc, are all not worth it in my humble opinion. These aren’t “niches”, they are mass markets. Yes there are big gains to be had here if you can really break into the mass market, but there are ten thousand people thinking the same way, so why set oneself up for the hardest fight right from the off?

Let me give you an example, I know a guy, Rob Benwell, who sold the Niche Domination System. What was his niche? Fish care! Not just fish in general, Fish are a market not a niche. No, his niche were just Discus Fish. This is his website: www.discus-fish-secrets.com It doesn’t make him a fortune, just about a $1,000 profit per month last time I heard. And he has many such sites. How to raise, care for and breed Discus fish?!? Now that’s niche! I’d rather have 10 small niche sites like this, each bringing in a few hundred pounds a week, than 1 site on loans, which would be a lot more effort, may never pay off, and be significantly higher risk.

Personally I would rather be a medium fish in a small pond; than a medium fish in a big pond, where there are bigger fish about, if that makes sense?

I have relationships with a couple of Financial Advisor’s, and have toyed with the idea a couple of times of going into the lead generation side of things, as they have the contacts to be able to make it pay. E.g. one of them does lead generation at the moment, and he reckons for every 100 qualified leads he gets (i.e. they fill out an “I’m interested in a unsecured loan, here are my details, someone call me.” form), he makes £2,500 GBP ($5,000 USD) profit. But getting those leads is damn hard! How much traffic to a website on loans do you think you need to get 100 people to give you their personal contact details and ask someone to call them? I’d say, that even if you had a really professional looking website, with great original content, you’d be looking at most at a 0.25% conversion rate from organic traffic. So you need 40,000 unique visitors to get 100 sign ups. Tough.

I would say that a full half (probably more) of everyone I meet who is trying to make a living online, tries to go after at least 1 of these high profile markets. I’d also say that 95% of the people I meet trying to make a living online, are not successful (which I define as being able to give up all other forms of income and live comfortably).

To my mind it’s pretty obvious that those 2 statistics are inexorably linked! I would also never buy a “Stunning New PLR Package In Highly Lucrative Niche“. If it was that stunning, the guy would be doing it himself, several times over, quietly dominating the niche, and rather than trumpeting it, he would be desperately trying to make as much money as possible before the word got out.

PLR (Private Label Rights) Packages are basically schemes where you get access to content, usually in the form of articles, that you can package and resell. But PLR Packages are a waste of time, because you are sharing your content with every other person who subscribes to the package. You are paying to use duplicate content, bad idea. I would say that when buying a PLR package you are actually taking a step back, because you erroneously think you are a step in the right direction, and that’s not a good start. Any business model where you buy the bits off the shelf, plug them together, and then expect the cash to roll in…. well you hopefully get the point.

If it was that simple, why would this guy by telling the likes of you and me, and offering to sell the hidden secret for just $49 USD? I’ll tell you why, because there’s another mass market “niche” that I didn’t list before, it used to be called the Get Rich Quick market, now it has a new name: the “Internet Marketing” market. I.e. people who want to make a living online and have a few bucks to throw at buying a “Get Rich Quick, give me $49 and I’ll tell you everything you need know and do to be holidaying in the sun while the cash roles in.” scheme. This is a multi $Bn world wide market.

This is actually the model that you need to follow though if you want to break into the extremely lucrative Internet Marketing niche. First, you need some modest success. You need to launch that website that makes you some cash, it needs to be > $10,000 within 3 months as a minimum. First, and this is the most important, you need to milk it for all it’s worth, until other people catch on and competition is squeezing your profit. Then, here’s what you do, you need to collate all you evidence: ClickBank cheques; Paypal statements; pictures of you on holiday with the Ferrari and gorgeous girl on your arm. Then turn what you did into a “system” and then sell it. After all, you have the proof right? It’s simple isn’t it? Of course that niche will be busted right open and the chances are only a small fraction who buy your system will make any money, but meh, you’ve probably just made 50 grand, so what do you care, right?

Do you know I’ve actually spoken to people who have lost their job, borrowed $20,000 USD and then gone to an Internet Marketing forum and asked what they should spend their money on to get rich online, but please it’s got to be quick, and guaranteed to make a profit, cos their money will run out soon and that’s all they’ve got to feed their family, and then they don’t know what they’ll do can they can’t get any more credit! {:-O Seriously, I’ve seen it.

It is however entirely possible to make a decent living online without targeting these mass markets, and I know several internet millionaires. What’s the common denominator? They all produce (in different ways) genuinely original products and services and websites, and they devote a significant amount of time to SEO and marketing their site. Some sell info products, most however have commissioned these themselves and are not selling other peoples stuff (though I do know successful affiliate marketers too). Some sell physical products, and they vary from pure drop shipping with a few scattered work from home “employees”. Some have progressed to visiting China and importing directly container loads of stock and have warehouses and offices and employees and the like.

It’s also entirely possible to make a modest income and be “rich” in other ways. Take Dave Taylor: of www.askdavetaylor.com He earns a modest $100,000 USD a year from that one site (that’s all he’s got) mostly from AdSense. But he only works part time, and he takes an entire month off work every summer to spend with his family. (His blog is pre-loaded with time delayed content for that month.) That’s his goal, he’s a happy man and I have immense respect for him for it.

I know another guy in Ireland who amongst other things, plies his trade on MySpace and the other social networking sites, doing for example affiliate leads for things like online paid surveys. He’s not wealthy, but he doesn’t have to work an office job to feed himself and his family. He made me laugh actually, cos he said to be once: “Whenever I get a bit bored and am lacking motivation, I just pop down the pub for a Guinness and watch all the fools trudging to and from work all day. That normally cheers me up.

So what’s the moral here, well it’s simple: There is no Get Rich Quick scheme in Internet Marketing. If you find one, keep your mouth shut. If someone’s selling you one, there’s little chance you’ll make any money in it. Don’t try to buy an income stream, go out and carve yourself a little corner of the net from which to peddle your genuinely unique and value add, wares, whatever that may be.

Update - Crossfit, Zone Diet Fatloss, Dead Cats, Hamsters, Work, Weddings, Google Dance, Babies etc etc

Posted in Crossfit, General, Home Business Opportunities, Search Engine Optimization, The Zone Diet at 6:53 am by Colin McNulty

I’ve suddenly realised it’s a few weeks since I posted. I don’t know about time flying when you’re having fun, but it certainly flies when you effing busy! So, in no particular order, a mega update:

Work - Works gone mad, I’m going to be launching a new website shortly and it seems every waking moment is devoted to it. I’ll post up here what it is when it’s ready.

Crossfit - I’ve got “magic shoes” as they are called down the gym. Actually they are Adidas Adistar Weightlifting Shoes:

Adidas Adistar Weightlifting Trainers

To be honest, they are a bit tight and not that comfortable, but they are managable. They were “new” off eBay for £60 including postage, half the shop price of £125, so a bargain really. They are better to lift in than normal trainers, but not a revolution I think. Either that, or I’m just not good enough to notice the difference, which is the more likely scenario!

Zone Diet and Fatloss - My Zone Diet Plan continues to work…. slowly, making incremental decreases on last months weight loss. Weight is down another 2 lbs to 13st9 now (191 lbs) and waist at belly button down another 1/2 inch to 37.5″, giving me a body fat calculation of 19%. It’s been 1% drop for each of the last 2 months, and I put this down to being slack on the diet.

I don’t measure anymore, I don’t calculate the blocks (other than protein) to ensure perfectly balanced meals, it’s all done by eye. I also cheat horrendously, I drink wine most nights of the week (too much still, got to work on that) and have chocolate several times a week. I guess it’s a testiment to the zone diet that I’m losing weight at all!

At the moment though, I’m content to not be on a “strict diet” and pretty much eat and drink what I want, and lose 1% of my body weight in fat each and every month. I figured when I started in February at 30% body fat, that it would take a year to get to where I wanted (15% - halving my fat) so I’m actually well on target for that, even at 1% per month.

Dead Cats - One of our four cats, Romulus, died. :( The wife found it knocked over by the side of the road on her way to work. Why is it always the nicest most friendly cat that dies? Romulus used to jump on the bed in the morning and butt me awake to feed him, annoying but cute. Still, we had a full burial in the garden, the kid of course was extremely upset, actually we all were, it’s very sad when cats die. Bye Rommy.

RIP Romulus

Hamster Jams - In ironic timing, a few days after Rommy died, we got a Hamster for the kid. It was a long planned reward for her excellent school report. We’re a bit worried though that it might have Wet Tail which the shop assistance put the fear of God into us about. Certainly it’s not a happy bunny at the moment and it’s tail is constantly wet as it’s weeing in its own bed. The stress of the move from the shop I guess. I’m not sure it’s going to make it to be honest, we’ll have to wait and see.

Weddings - Went to the wedding of our good freinds Becca and Marcus last week, a good time was had by all *hick*. Errr that’s all there is to say really, a wedding’s a wedding. Been to rather a lot of them it seems. Oh, did have a small mishap with the wedding present: I was sent out to buy crystal wine glasses as a wedding present… managed to come back with a 600 piece poker chip set in aluminim case. I can’t imagine how that happened. I wonder if Marcus will bring it next time he comes over? ;)

New Babies - Another pair of good friends, Dan and Rachel, have had a baby.  At 2 weeks over due, and a 36 hour labour, Ethan was a hefty 8 lbs 13 oz!  Congrats to all three of them.

Google Dance  - Times up, I’ve got to run.  I’ll have to come back to how I’ve faired in the latest Google Page Rank Dance.

A Masterful Salesman Performance

Posted in General, Home Business Opportunities at 12:32 pm by Colin McNulty

I’ve just had my driveway “cleaned and treated” by a trio of dodgy Paddy’s. It’s bizarre timing as the wife mentioned only on Sunday about the state of the drive (weeds and moss etc) and she also slipped on its slipper surface yesterday. That’s pretty much the only reason I said yes, and that they weren’t that expensive.

However, that’s not the point. The sales patter the guy had was excellent, and hit ALL of the major influence factors proven to get people to buy: Reciprocation; Consistency; Social Proof; Liking; Authority and Scarcity. He also had several upsells and downsell in his pipeline designed to maximise profits.

Sales patter:
- He informed me that they were doing the estate and had already done some of the drives round the corner. Social Proof - TICK.
- He said that it was normally £180, but he’d do it for £90 - Reciprocation - TICK. (actually I paid £50 in the end, also he used the Contrast Principle here too).
- He was a very affable fellow, full of smiles, and trying to give me the impression he was doing a favour, just for me. Liking - TICK.
- He was only “in the area today, we won’t be here tomorrow”. Scarcity - TICK

Post agreement Upsells (I’ve said yes once, I’m more likely to say yes again, Consistency principle - TICK.):
- Upsell 1 - Repairing my uneven driveway, he “Does block paving for a living”. Authority - TICK.
- Upsell 2 - Fascias and Sofits redone in PVC.

Downsell (the principle here is if you’ve tried upsells and they don’t work, then try a down sell. He was quite deliberate to wait till I’d definitely said no to the upsells before offering me the downsell):
- They put on the “Summer” coat on the drive, but lucky me, they had just 1/2 a tin left over of extra special Winter coat stuff. *Just* enough to do my drive, and they’d put on this extra durable coat for a very low £30 more. ;-)

All in all, a masterful sales performance.

If you’re interested in learning about this subject and the psychological triggers that make people say yes, I can’t recommend this book enough:

Work, Crossfit, Work, Zone Diet, Work

Posted in Crossfit, General, Home Business Opportunities, The Zone Diet at 8:03 am by Colin McNulty

That’s pretty much been my week this week with not a lot of time for much else. Work’s really busy at the moment, been to Crossfit 3 times this week, and more Zoning of course.

I’m working on some book reviews. I have 3 Zone Diet books now, and have read 2 of them and part way through the third. When I’m done I’m going to stick up reviews of them all here, along with recomendations. Just post a comment if you’re interested, and it’ll gee me along to actually do it.

Work is hectic as I’m balancing peaks of work for existing clients with getting new business plus trying to find the time to work on my own projects. It’s very frustrating when clients verbally say they are interested, then it just never seems to come off, month after month! Still, that’s part of the job.

Crossfit it still going well. I actually trained with a Gold Medal Olympic rower yesterday! If you’re interested in what CrossFit is, here’s a couple of videos, just as a reminder, Crossfit is about on short sharp intensive exercise, so the routines are bursty and rarely last more than 30 minutes.

The first is 1 round of a 30 round routine called “Chelsea”. Each round is 3 pull ups - 6 press ups - 9 squats. Do 30 rounds as fast as you can, and record your time.

Chelsea on YouTube

The second video is of a workout called “Fran”. What you see is the ENTIRE workout for the day, and it’s all over in a couple of minutes. The routine is 21 - 15 - 9 of Thruster and pullups. (The video shows what thrusters are better then I can explain them, they look a LOT easier than they are.) These guys are extreme, the one on the left with longer hair is Mark, one of the coaches at Crossfit Manchester, the one on the right is a cage fighter called Kam:

Fran on YouTube

EDIT: Hmmm how do you get YouTube to embed on WordPress. I copied the “Embed” code into the Code section of the post, but it didn’t show up?

Is FreeIQ going to be the next YouTube?

Posted in General, Home Business Opportunities, Search Engine Optimization at 10:02 am by Colin McNulty

Brad Fallon is a serial entrepreneur who is launching a new site call FreeIQ. The basic premise is that you can uploaded informational videos, eBooks, audio etc of how to do stuff. Other users will rate the videos so you will get peer reviewed content, sorted by category.

Of course being Brad, there’s going to be a money option here too, so there will be premium content that you can buy, but this too will be peer reviewed. In fact, the review system is called “ReviewRank”, hmmm I wonder where that idea came from? Probably the same place the starting page layout design did too. ;-) Still, if you want to be successful in life, emulating one of the worlds most successful company’s doesn’t seem like a bad approach to take does it.

I’ll be watching FreeIQ to see if it gains the critical mass it will need for success.

Google Checkout comes to the UK

Posted in General, Home Business Opportunities at 10:38 am by Colin McNulty

I predict this is going to revolutionise Google advertising. Basically Google are jumping on the PayPal bandwagon and offering their own payment processing scheme. All well and good you may think, but the key here is that they are integrating it with Google AdWords (the adverts you see down the right hand side when searching Google).

Instead of seeing a normal ad with a link to a website, you’ll see this grovey logo:

Google Checkout

Which should improve click though rates and conversion rates, simply by leveraging the Google brand with your adds. Keep your eye out, you’ll start seeing ads like this for sure.

Start to Earn Money through Ebay

Posted in General, Home Business Opportunities at 10:07 am by Colin McNulty

It’s a fact that many individuals are turning their focus to the world wide web to make a living these days. After all, there are a plethora of home business opportunities to check out and earn income from. One of the most popular however is selling stuff on auction websites such as eBay.

If you are only interested in fast riches however, eBay is probably not for you. Despite its opportunities, there are still some downsides to eBay as a home business opportunity. For one, you cannot anticipate immediate returns in your money, because although there is certainly a wide market reach, there are also many sellers. What’s more, there are the power sellers who have achieved their own loyal following. So here are some useful tips that can help you in becoming an effective eBay player as your home business opportunity.

Research best practice. As well as the tips here, see what that experts say. But don’t take their word for it, check out home business opportunity reviews of systems like Oliver Goehlers’ EBay Kommando .

Begin small. When you are an eBay beginner, you will not have much in the way of positive feedback to give potential buyers confidence in your goods, so it could take awhile to find buyers as some will shy away. Search your house for items you need to get rid of, and give a virtual car boot sale. This way, it will not hurt your bank book much at the same time perking up your account with positive feedback on relatively small invaluable items. Your home business begins at home.

Look for things in your community. When you are starting to be recognized in eBay, you can gather items for selling from garage sales within your community. Don’t get rubbish though. What you should do is try to make an good deal by buying quality items at a cheap price that you can sell on, on eBay for a profit. A combination of saleable products with a cheap price will always attract consumers and thus increase your income.

Advertise. When you think you have at least basic knowledge on eBay, then you can begin really promoting your business. A good way to create new business is to put advertisements in your local shops or in local newspapers offering to buy goods. It works this way: individuals give you their goods to sell on eBay for them, and you take a percentage off the price. Be a little careful here, there maybe some local laws in force that control such practices, so you had better check your local government legislature about them. You don’t want your home business opportunity turning into a home business disaster.

Research your options. When it comes to home business opportunities, like in eBay, there are many sources for potential goods to sell. For one, estate attorneys have clients who want to sell their recently deceased relatives belongings. Storage facilities keep goods people don’t have room for and sooner or later they may want to sell, so inquire from your local storage facility if they’d be willing to give out information about your home business to those who ask. The most essential thing is you get yourself identified in eBay to help your home business grow.

Find a suitable wholesaler as partner. Individuals who make lots of money on eBay often take this route at some point. Partnering with a wholesaler is an excellent way to get a profit, because the wholesaler will usually handle storage and even shipping, so all you have to do is point customers their way. This is called Drop Shipping. Start the bidding off with a price somewhere between wholesale and retail, if possible. That way, customers will still see it as a deal and you are very likely to obtain a nice profit margin. Not bad for a home business huh? Sell someone elses stuff, which you don’t even see and take a profit for it!

Despite eBay being one of the effective home business opportunities around, you still have to work hard and apply ample time and effort. Don’t anticipate unlimited riches right away, and be willing to give your home business opportunity time to grow and you will be able to build a booming work from home business that will give you financial security and the freedom to spend more time with family and friends.

eBay is but one of many hundreds if not thousands of home business opportunities. Take a look at at the Business Opportunity Review site for examples of other home business opportunities like the Cash on Demand system by the excellent Andrew Reynolds

Introduction to Marketing as an Affiliate

Posted in General, Home Business Opportunities, Search Engine Optimization at 9:03 pm by Colin McNulty

It’s part of my job to understand more about Internet Marketing and Search Engine Optimisation (or Optimization if you prefer) than you do! ;) So some of what I do is write articles and publish them. I’ve recently been publishing versions of this article, so it seemed appropriate to publish it here too.

———
Marketing as an Affiliate (or Affiliate Marketing if you prefer) is a very trendy and modern working from home based business that’s increasing in popularity with every passing day. Affiliate marketers promote internet merchandise that is not their own. The Internet business you are helping will pay you a commission for each time a visitor clicks from your website to theirs, (this is called Pay Per Click); each time somebody hands over their details through your site, (Pay Per Lead); or for each purchase made through you, (Pay Per Sale). This can be great for both the Internet business and the affiliate marketer: the Internet business does not pay until it sees sales, and the marketer can earn substantial commissions.

Remember, it is quite possible to fail at Marketing as an Affiliate. If you’re contemplating getting into the online marketing game, here are some basic tips to guide you:

Ask questions. Do not be coy about asking comprehensive questions of affiliate sellers. Be picky if they can not deal with your questions to your satisfaction. Do they pay per sale, per lead, etc? How do they monitor your sales? Do they have marketing tools to help you getting started? Ask for the Internet business’s conversion rate? What are the setup costs? Is it possible to monitor your sales on their website.

Pick some goods you are willing to stand behind. If you are not completely satisfied about the merchandise you’ve picked to advertise, do not try to fake it. Potential customers won’t be prepared to buy your what you’re selling if you do not approve it entirely, and you won’t do this if you in fact do not truthfully believe in it. So shop around. Definitely think about purchasing sample services from a variety of sites. Email the Internet business, explain that you are planning to becoming an affiliate of there’s, and that you would like to try their services out. Most Internet businesses would be glad to supply you with a free sample.

Write online articles. To spread the word about your web page, it would be of benefit to give the impression of being a recognised authority in your field. Publish articles about topics in your market place that your browsers might be searching for, and publish them to article online publications. Be sure you include a link back to your web page so it will add to your link count and make your web page more tempting to search engines.

Build a site search engines like. The success of your site depends on traffic. Search engines like websites that are full of accurate subject matter, have a great deal websites pointing to them, and that enjoy a reasonable quantity of visitors already.
