Personal Safety is not traditional “Self Defence”

Personal Safety is my current passion. I generally don’t like the term “Self Defence”, because it conjures up images of lots of people in white pyjamas, bare foot with coloured belts, practising kicks and punches for weeks on end, and what I do couldn’t be further away from that.

I teach Personal Defence Readiness around Manchester, which is the general public arm of Tony Blauer’s SPEAR System. Whilst yes there are some easy to remember, simple and very effective physical drills, a huge part of the system is about behaviour and psychology, and dealing with the emotions you will feel when in a stressful, potentially violent situation.

Real street ready self defence is a term that’s sadly too often synonymous with simple aggression, so let me share an example of what I mean. This is a message I was sent by one of my female students who successfully used what I’d taught her to avoid getting into a lift with a man who was following her (she was wearing high heels and had her kid in a buggy with her whilst out shopping): I was followed! 2010 Achievements

25 January 2011

In the new year, it’s never a bad thing I think to look back at what you’ve achieved last year to objectively decide if you think it’s been a good year or not. It’s something I try to do every year, and I did last year. To be honest I felt last year was pretty [...]

PDR Drill – The 3 Step Bear Hug, Demoed and Dissected

5 December 2010

As part of the warm up in our weekly Personal Defence Readiness™ (PDR) classes at CrossFit3D, we always do the 3 Step Bear Hug drill. For me, the 3 Step Bear Hug encompasses in a single drill many of the core elements of Tony Blauer’s S.P.E.A.R. SYSTEM™: A realistic training scenario. The flinch response. Starting [...]

The Flinch is Faster than the Faint

7 November 2010

This is a great example of how the flinch is faster… than well just about anything. In this case, the flinch is faster than the faint. It’s a perfect example of a Protective Flinch and validation (as if it was needed) that the SPEAR System (see http://www.TonyBlauer.com) is based on real physiology. WPvideo 1.10 Come [...]

Another Cross Extensor Reflex Video

25 October 2010

A few weeks ago I put up a video of the Cross Extensor Reflex, which is what the SPEAR System calls the reflex we have to grab on tight to whatever is in our hands when we’re surprised. It showed a woman nearly getting mown down and running for her life, but not letting go [...]

Another Pre Contact Cues Video

18 October 2010

This weekly Monday video is what we’ll be discussing at the PDR (SPEAR) class at CrossFit3D tonight at 8pm. The question is: Apart from the obvious “Walk away”, what should this girl have done to avoid getting hit? There are several things. WPvideo 1.10

Pre Contact Cues

10 October 2010

Following on from last week’s post on the Cross Extensor Reflex, this week’s Monday self defence video is about pre contact cues. These are the signs that a punch (or other primary initiation attack) is about to come your way. Check out this video of this woman getting punched on the nose: WPvideo 1.10 We’ll [...]

I’m a Certified PDR Coach

22 August 2010

I’m very pleased to announce that having got my certificate through, I’m officially a certified Personal Defence Readiness (PDR) Coach: If you don’t know what that is, it’s the general public side of Tony Blauer’s SPEAR system of self defence. But “self defence” doesn’t really come close to describing it, as that phrase implies it’s [...]
