{"id":714,"date":"2009-08-10T18:30:13","date_gmt":"2009-08-10T18:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.colinmcnulty.com\/blog\/?p=714"},"modified":"2010-03-17T21:06:42","modified_gmt":"2010-03-17T21:06:42","slug":"another-competition-another-injury","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colinmcnulty.com\/blog\/2009\/08\/10\/another-competition-another-injury\/","title":{"rendered":"Another Competition, Another Injury!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Yorkshire Masters competition is on Sunday and just like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.colinmcnulty.com\/blog\/2009\/03\/29\/british-masters-weightlifting-championship-video-2009\/\">last competition<\/a>, I\u2019ve managed to injure myself 2 weeks before!  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.colinmcnulty.com\/blog\/2009\/03\/10\/bad-shoulder-no-lifting-this-week\/\">Last time it was a shoulder injury<\/a>, which fortunately didn\u2019t affect my lifting.  This time <strong>I\u2019ve strained my neck<\/strong> doing a new exercise last week.  <\/p>\n<p>I was stupid really, I should have known better not to try something new 10 days before a comp.  However <strong>I went to a New Mills physio yesterday<\/strong> (the excellent Jo) and it doesn\u2019t appear to be anything too serious, I\u2019ve just strained a muscle at the base of my neck \/ top of my back, between my spine and left shoulder blade.  <\/p>\n<p>How did I do it?  I was trying to practice my stability at the top of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.colinmcnulty.com\/blog\/tag\/clean-and-jerk\/\">clean &#038; jerk<\/a> by <strong>holding a 100kg bar over my head for 10 seconds<\/strong>.  I managed 2 out of an intended 3 sets of 10 seconds each when I noticed the pain.  I was about to start the 3rd set when sense kicked in: <strong>sudden neck pain = stop your workout!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I will take some solace from the fact that when this happened last time, I got a new personal best Olympic lifting total.  In fact, I\u2019ve found the complete set of results for this year\u2019s British Masters on the <strong>Yorkshire and North East Counties Weightlifting site<\/strong> here: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ynecawla.org.uk\/bmwl09.htm\">http:\/\/www.ynecawla.org.uk\/bmwl09.htm<\/a> Sadly the results are an images, so you can\u2019t search for names, but I&#8217;m 3rd from the top.<\/p>\n<p>What I have to decide now, is <strong>what sort of workouts to do this week?<\/strong>  Conventional wisdom is to take it easy the week before a competition and I certainly need to do that to give my neck time to recover.
