Northern Masters Champion 2009

As promised this is the video of me lifting in the BWLA Northern Masters Olympic Weightlifting competition in Keighley, West Yorkshire last week. I was trying to get a 175 total. To be clear, I won due to the fact I was the only person lifting in my age and weight category, lol.

If you compare that video to my video of the Yorkshire and North East Counties Open championships last year, despite lifting more then, I think I’ve improved my form. Particularly I’ve worked hard on keeping the bar closer to my legs on the 1st pull, but there are still more things to work on. On both the Snatch, the Clean and the Jerk, the bar moves forward causing a forward jump. It’s not as bad as it was, but more effort is required to fix that. I’ve also been working on not raising my bum up first, as you can see, it’s not completely fixed yet.

If you’re interested, this is a very quick video of my daughter doing a deadlift. Checkout the facial expressions, bless her!

Colin, you’ve brought a real smile to my face on both those videos.

Firstly, your competition video is really inspiring to a novice such as myself. What sort of weights were you doing when you started?

I loved the expression on your wee daughters face too. She had good form though!

    Well done sir!

Lol thanks. I should point out that she worked up to that weight over half an hour, starting with a 5kg bar and only being allowed to move up when she demonstrated good form. But you’re right, her form is nice.

It’s one of the funny things about weight lifting, people think it’s dangerous, but as long as it’s in a controlled and coached environment, it’s an extremely safe sport. And as she’s only doing 2/3 of body weight, whilst heavy for her, it’s not even close to a maximum effort lift (and rightly so).

I started like everyone else Steve: with the poly pipe, then an empty bar, then 30kg, 40kg etc etc. Crossfit it all about form before intensity or load. If your form isn’t right, you don’t move up. Mark and Karl will whip you into shape. 😉

Good effort Col. Btw what software do you use to put Titles or wording on the videos? Cheers Tony

I didn’t, it’s some new feature of YouTube, it did it automatically, though I think you can add your own overlays too.
